Wheatfields and the Sea or: how to feel deprived of sensation is a video and sound installation that was part of a six-month collaborative exchange project between Turkish animator and video artist Ayşe Gül Süter and American film artist Jonathan Rattner. Created during the spring and summer of 2016, in which there were multiple bombings and shootings in Europe and in the United States, this work is a reflection of how to process and interact with these acts of violence in our contemporary landscape. A culmination of conversations, emails, and sounds and images passed back and forth, this work meditates on the desires and consistent failures to move beyond the act of hiding; the attraction to, as well as the burden of, the weight of our secrets and beliefs. Is it possible to move beyond our pasts, our histories, our individuality?
